As we celebrate Juneteenth, we are reminded of the importance of inclusivity and equality in our society, and we are honored to share the inspiring story of Dr. Robert T. Freeman. ❤️💛💚

Born in 1846 to formerly enslaved parents, Dr. Freeman persevered against the ignorance and prejudice that plagued early America, overcoming rejection, and making history as he graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1869, becoming one of the first African American Dentists in the United States.

His achievements paved the way for future generations of African American dentists and healthcare professionals and serve as a powerful reminder of one person's impact on breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for others.

Important Update for SBVCDS Members receiving federal funding for their practice:
Recently, the Affordable Care Act's Section 1557 has been updated, introducing new nondiscrimination regulations that affect dental practices participating in certain federal programs.

To ensure compliance, practices must post required notices by November 5. These regulations aim to advance and restore protections for vulnerable populations, including individuals with limited English proficiency, pregnant individuals, and LGBTQI+ individuals who participate in health programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance.

Notably, the updated regulations also introduce requirements for the nondiscriminatory use of artificial intelligence (AI) in patient care. As we continue to integrate technology into our practices, it is crucial to prioritize fairness and equity in our treatment approaches.
